The Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce will present the 2nd annual Mardi Gras All You Can Eat Seafood Festival from 12:00 to 5:00PM Saturday March 7th at the Harmon Field open air gym, 117 Harmon Field Rd, Tryon, NC 28782.

Activities include live DJ dance music, all-you-can-eat seafood consisting of oysters roasted over an open fire, shrimp, mussels, low country boil, barbecue chicken wings, authentic gumbo, coleslaw, rolls, iced tea, coffee, king cakes and a great selection of draft beers and wine. A bonfire will light up the sky as guests dance away the hours.

Registration is open for UNC Asheville’s 2020 Pi(e) Run, an annual fun run that celebrates all things Pi(e). This year’s event will be held on Pi Day, Saturday, March 14, at Pi time, 3:14 p.m. Runners will run 3.14 miles around UNC Asheville’s campus and celebrate with pie at the finish line. The event is open to the public with an early-bird rate of $15 before Feb. 15. Runners who sign up before March 1 will receive a t-shirt and swag bag, and registration continues through March 14 at a cost of $20, with on-site registration and check-in starting at 2 p.m. the day of the race. The 2020 Pi Day Run will start from UNC Asheville’s Quad and circle University Heights three times, via campus sidewalks, concluding with pie at the finish line. The fun run includes a pie baking contest, judged by Math Leaders from the Marvelous Math Club, with prizes awarded, and this year will feature a raffle. Registration includes a raffle entry for each runner. Registration also is available for the pie contest, without the run, by filling out the interest form at unca.edu/pi-run.

Proceeds from the annual Pi(e) Run will benefit the Asheville Initiative for Math at UNC Asheville and its Marvelous Math Club at Pisgah View Community Center. Marvelous Math Club is a partnership between UNC Asheville, Asheville Housing Authority, and Asheville City Schools. The Club uses math as a catalyst to build leadership skills, create community and provide a space for individualized academic support and social-emotional growth.

We’re having kittens! Join Triskelion Brewing Company and Blue Ridge Humane Society on Saturday, March 7th for a Kitten Shower! Come support BRHS and help them prepare for the hundreds of kittens that will pass through their doors this year. The Blue Ridge Humane Society, Inc., is a 501(c)3 animal welfare organization started in 1950 dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for animals in Henderson County and our neighboring communities. BRHS cares for pets awaiting adoption at the Adoption Center; offers low-cost vaccine clinics, animal education programs, pet training classes, and youth education and projects; coordinates community pet food assistance, emergency vet assistance, and the Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP), which is a collaboration with Henderson County, the City of Hendersonville, and the Henderson County Animal Services Center.

The Philosophy Department at the University of North Carolina, Asheville hosts a biennial professional philosophy conference on the Philosophy of Disability. On March 6-7, 2020, we will be hosting our 3rd such conference. Papers presented engage with Disability Studies from a philosophical point of view. Past speakers include Eva Feder Kittay, Kim Q. Hall, Adam Cureton, and Kevin Timpe. This year’s keynote speaker is Professor Elizabeth Barnes (University of Virginia), who is the author of The Minority Body: A Theory of Disability (Oxford University Press, 2016). Professor Barnes’s keynote lecture will be “Gender without Gender Identity: Cognitive Disability and the Need for Gender Inclusion” in which she argues that the growing popularity of views that equate gender with gender identity marginalize some cognitively disabled people.

 

The Merrell Adventure Dash is all about getting outside and challenging yourself to work hard for your good time. Suitable for families as well as adults, participants will negotiate a series of natural and man-made obstacles along the 5K course, including balance components, climbs and nets, a river-run, and raft crossing. This holiday weekend, enjoy a fun, family-friendly adventure run in the beautiful Nantahala Gorge. Merrell Adventure Dash participants can choose between the 5K dash or a 1K fun run. Kids aged 12 and under race free with a participating adult.

Spend your evening learning about the Red and Grey Wolves of North America with your family! We’ll start with an indoor presentation on these elusive creatures, followed by a trek to our wolf habitats located onsite at the Nature Center for a howling session. Discover the legends and lore of these top predators and find out the truth about wolves. This kid-friendly version of our Wolf Howl event is geared toward families. $10 for children, $18 for adults.

It’s been a long time…an art exhibit of watercolor paintings and mixed-media boxes by student/artist Nick Humphreys and his teacher Richmond Smith.

Nick Humphreys mostly paints what he loves best: flowers. But he also collaborates on different watercolor paintings, of Richmond and Nick’s special relationship, and the artwork that they have produced over these past two years. Nick says that “If art is detailed and organized, it makes your heart connect with your brain and what you’re thinking.” Richmond Smith creates mixed-media boxes inspired from poems that he has written and from personal experiences that reflect acute observations about the world that we live in. Richmond explores how an artist’s practice might incorporate as many materials and techniques as possible to express the idea & his vision in the best way.

Dig out your bell bottoms, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie because we’re throwing a Funkraiser for the Arts dance party and auction! Headlining the event will be the popular Freeflow Band who the Mountain Express called “The Guardians of Funk.” Ticket price includes delicious hors d’oeuvres, desserts, beer and wine.

The Freeflow Band is known to throw an “irresistible dance party” with a set-list full of Motown, R&B, Soul and of course, Funk. The dynamic foursome is made up of lead singer and percussionist Lil’  Rog Ware, lead singer Kazual Collins on keyboards, vocalist and bassist Darrell ‘The Black Note’ Griffin and LT on lead guitar. Local comedian and performer Mondy Carter of Reasonably Priced Babies fame will bring his own smooth vibe to keep the action moving.

The upper level of the Arts Center will be brimming with silent auction items donated from local businesses. Items from clothing, jewelry and art to baskets, packages and gift certificates will be available to bid on.
