The first season, Anneliese, tells the story of Anneliese Glaser, who is still mourning the death, years earlier, of her sister Claire. The podcast is presented as Anneliese’s audio notes to her former therapist as she works through her feelings about her sister, but soon takes an eerie turn to document hauntings in her new apartment, as well as Anneliese’s potentially flawed memories of Claire. The season ran bi-weekly from October 31st, 2017 until March 6th, 2018.

Season Two follows Ellen, who is running from her family’s criminal activities and finds herself working in a very unique freak show. Set in the 19th century and centering on a queer faerie love story, the second season incorporates season one’s themes into a different but equally unsettling tale. Season two ran from September 4th, 2018 until January 15th, 2019.

Season Three (Josie) ran Jan 4th-Sept. 1st, 2020, and follows Josie, a disgraced American codebreaker living in London during the Blitz, who begins seeing and interacting with what appear to be the spirits of the London dead. She quickly realizes the bombs may have released something much older and more ominous. Government conspiracies, Lovecraftian cults, and Lon Chaney’s The Wolf Man all figure in this expansive folk horror tale.

Season Four (Ash) began April 13th, 2021, and follows a construction company hired to renovate the Hawthorne House, an abandoned but not necessarily empty house with sinister ties to the lead contractor’s grandfather.

Cinema on the Square: Encanto

KOFFIN KATS

The groundwork for what has become the relentlessly-touring sonic assault known as The Koffin Kats was laid near Detroit, Michigan when Vic Victor (Lead Vocalist, Upright Bass) joined forces with long-time friend Tommy Koffin (Guitar). After adding Damian Detroit (Drums) the band kicked off in June 2003, stopping for nothing. Now, with over ten years of touring internationally and over two thousand live shows, the touring trio’s current home is out on the open road.

The Koffin Kats began by putting together songs with such subjects as dealing with the horrors of the real world, as well as Science Fiction. The band started in small local bars playing for beer, hoping for gas money, and eventually made their way out of the Midwest. The next couple of years contained positives including numerous North American tours, and negatives concerning changes at the drumming position. During this time they released their first three albums: Koffin Kats (2003), Inhumane (2005), and Straying From The Pack (2006).

The three album releases and their supporting tours gained attention for The Koffin Kats and helped get the band noticed in the wide world of punk and psychobilly. In 2007 Vic and Tommy connected with drummer Eric “E-Ball” Walls to record the band’s fourth studio album, Drunk In The Daylight (2008), and catalyzed what the band is now known for: love for their fans and the road, and playing everywhere for everyone willing to watch and listen.

In the years following the release of Drunk In The Daylight, The Koffin Kats have established their name performing in Europe, and have also been included on tours with some of the tops acts in psychobilly, including, but not limited to, Mad Sin, Nekromantix, and The Meteors. In 2009 the trio released their fifth studio album, Forever For Hire, and Tommy departed at the year’s end to pursue a normal life. Shortly thereafter, “EZ” Ian Jarrell took over the guitarist position and joined the band on tour. While on the road they worked on the material that would become featured on their split album with fellow psychobilly act 12 Step Rebels, From Our Hands To Yours (2011).

The Koffin Kats signed with Sailor’s Grave Records in late 2011, and released Our Way & The Highway in January 2012. The trio supported their sixth studio album’s release with non-stop international touring, finally ending in summer of 2013. In autumn of the same year, they released another full-length album with Sailor’s Grave Records, Born Of The Motor. Sales and reviews have proven Born Of The Motor, the band’s seventh studio album, to be their most successful release to date.

Early 2014 brought another change to The Koffin Kats’ member roster; Ian Jarrell left the band to handle personal business at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Not wanting to bring someone too far removed from The Koffin Kats family into the fold, Vic and Eric enlisted John Kay (Guitar). John was the engineer on numerous recordings.

The founding lineup returned in 2016.

Six years after his departure, Tommy Koffin returned to playing guitar with The Koffin Kats. With Vic Victor on lead vocals and upright bass, and E Ball Walls on drums. In 2017, the trio released their latest album titled “Party Time In The End Times.”

2019 is a year of new music and international touring. KK will be releasing a new song each month while touring throughout North America and Europe.

American Airlines nonstop to Miami- inaugural flight event at the gate to note this important milestone

Who: Asheville Regional Airport and American Airlines

What: Inaugural flight to Miami – this is the first time in history that Miami has been on the route map at AVL, bringing total nonstop airport destinations to 25 (and American Airlines’ ninth nonstop option from AVL), the most destinations the airport has ever had available. AVL is a bright spot in the travel industry – with passenger numbers exceeding pre-pandemic highs, and growing. An economic anchor organization in western North Carolina, it is important to mark these growth milestones with the community.

The airport will host a short ceremony to commemorate the new service, followed by a traditional water arch over the plane as it departs to Miami.

Visuals will include:

Asheville Gallery of Art’s June Exhibit: “Nature Mirrors” with artist Cynthia Llanes

The Asheville Gallery of Art presents oil painter Cynthia Llanes during the month of June in a show entitled, “Nature’s Mirrors”. The opening reception is on First Friday, June 3, 2022, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Cynthia will feature the ever-changing phenomena of nature. She says, “Nature speaks to us so eloquently about love, beauty, design, harmony of colors, and so much more. Every day nature tells us a story and I feel compelled to share its story through my new collection of oil paintings. I like to sit in front of my easel and paint these feelings of wonder, hoping to capture what the natural world brings us to experience and enjoy.”
Cynthia uses pure, bright colors with palette knife and bold brush strokes. Painting en plein aire allows her to paint a moment in time capturing the vista before her and its beautiful stories. Her photos and outdoor sketches provide references when creating larger studio works. Painting on location gives her a lift and an emotional connection to the landscape. She says, “This is an exciting phase of my journey as an artist.”
After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Cynthia pursued a career in fashion as a textile designer in the Los Angeles fashion district for many years. Inspired by the endless possibilities in visual art, she then devoted more of her time to painting. Cynthia’s vision for her art was transformed after moving from California to Western North Carolina.
She has travelled extensively in Asia and parts of Europe. “The many sights and scenes from all cultures have helped me in my growth as an artist. My paintings are not reproductions of what I see but I try to capture the magic in a scene and share my personal experience to connect with the viewer. I believe that art’s purpose is to uplift, inspire, communicate, and sometimes, even provoke a conversation.”

Asheville Regional Airport: New art exhibit highlighting local artists

Journey, the newest exhibit showing in the airport art gallery, is open to the public now through June 26, 2022. The local art is unique, vibrant and engaging, and is displayed for the enjoyment of passengers and other visitors to the airport.

The local artists’ work featured in this exhibit focus on two different mediums. Hannah Hall’s pieces show a unique method of fiber artistry that captures a variety of outdoor landscapes. Cathleen Klibanoff uses mixed media by incorporating found objects, resin casts, acrylic and more to create vibrant seasonal expressions and a study of equine forms.

“The airport is a gateway to western North Carolina and it is wonderful to be able to introduce travelers to our region to a glimpse of local art culture,” said Alexandra Ingle, Brand and Experience Designer at AVL and curator of the gallery.

Bearfootin’ Public Art Walk + Auction

ince 2003, the Bearfootin’ Art Walk has helped raise funding for Downtown Hendersonville and a variety of local non-profits. In addition to raising funds, the bears offer a window into good work being done by community organizations in Henderson County.

The Bearfootin’ Bears arrive as blank slates before local artists transform each in a spectacular fashion, with creative themes ranging from Mona Lisa to Blue Ridge Mountain scenery. After the “Reveal” event in early May, the bears then take up residence in downtown Hendersonville for the duration of the summer and fall, up until auction. Participants bid during the auction to raise funds for local non-profits and Downtown Hendersonville. Winning bids up to $3,000 are split evenly between the downtown program and the nonprofit chosen by the sponsor, while bid amounts exceeding $3,000 are directed entirely to the non-profit. In 2021, the Bears raised more than $100,000, and in 2022 we hope to continue the tradition of giving.

If you’re looking to expand your garden and want a quick and inexpensive project, consider using the building method known as wattle. Wattling has been used for centuries and involves weaving thin, whippy branches around 2×2 inch stakes. It’s a project you can do by yourself, or as a way to get your kids involved in the garden. This short video shows you all you need to know to get started.

Land Trust Day–June is Conservation Month

Land Trust Day falls on the first Saturday in June to coincide with the annual National Trails Day. Conservation land trusts like Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy play a critical role in helping to conserve land for public enjoyment as well as privately-owned preserves that protect viewsheds and wildlife corridors near national trails. Land trusts work to protect and manage a wide variety of important land and water resources, including habitat for rare plants and animals, farmland, and sources of drinking water for millions of people.

We are so grateful to local businesses who recognize the importance of this work and have stepped up with their support for SAHC on Land Trust Day – Saturday, June 4!

Need Help With Water Bills? New Water Assistance Program Could Offer Help.

If you’re behind on your water bill or afraid your water might get cut off, a new resource might be able to help you. On Jan. 4, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners approved more than $450,000 in federal funding for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). The initiative is aimed at preventing water disconnections and helping reconnect drinking and wastewater services.

The LIHWAP will be administered by Buncombe County-based Eblen Charities. The nonprofit will make payments directly to utilities on behalf of qualifying households. The program is slated to run through Sept. 30, 2023 or until funds are exhausted.

Eligibility requirements

Households that currently receive Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Work First services, or those that received Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) services from Oct. 1, 2020-Sept. 30, 2021, are automatically eligible to receive this benefit if their water services have been cut off or are in danger of being cut off.

What Is Outpace Hunger?

Looking for a way to make a real impact this spring and summer? Feed people while pursuing your passion through Outpace Hunger, an action-based fundraising campaign that turns a favorite activity into meals!

For decades, MANNA FoodBank has been working to outpace hunger and food insecurity all across 16 counties of Western North Carolina, including the Qualla Boundary. The 2022 campaign runs May 1 through September 30, and we invite you join the growing community of folks who are Outpacing Hunger alongside of us!

How It Works

Participating in Outpace Hunger is easy!

You decide your level of commitment, so every participant can create their own path to helping provide food to our community. Participants also decide how, when, and where they complete their goal, any time now through the campaign end on September 30.

Outpace Hunger participants:

(1) Register to be a part of MANNA’s Outpace Hunger community. The $20 registration fee includes a t-shirt for you and provides 80 MEALS for neighbors facing food insecurity in WNC.

(2) Choose a favorite activity (run, walk, roll, stroll, hike, bike, paddle, climb, float, skate, golf, and everything in between!) to complete individually, or as a family/group/team.

(3) Set a goal to reach. This can be an activity-related goal, a fundraising goal, or both.

(4) Invite friends and family to support your fundraising efforts through your own, personalized Outpace Hunger webpage.

Whether running a 5K, walking your neighborhood, hiking the Mountains to Sea trail, or paddling the French Broad River, Outpace Hunger participants play a vital part in ensuring our WNC neighbors have access to healthy food.

Volunteer Opportunity: Land Trust Day

SAHC has partnered with local businesses who support SAHC’s conservation work for Land Trust Day, Saturday, June 4th, to celebrate and recognize the work that land trusts contribute toward preserving our vital land and water resources. Mast General Store will donate 20% of sales from their Asheville and Waynesville stores, and Second Gear will donate 10% from their Asheville store. We need help from volunteers who are comfortable talking with the public about SAHC’s conservation work and handing out information from our table, which will be inside the stores. White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 6

Hiking Challenge 6 is here! In Conserving Carolina’s and WPA’s White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 6, you get to explore the places you’re helping to protect—and they’re amazing! We invite you to take eight hikes on lands that Conserving Carolina has helped to protect, enhance, or open to the public.

This challenge includes two all-new Conserving Carolina trails with gorgeous views! Plus, you can see the highest waterfall east of the Rockies, lakes and waterfalls in DuPont State Recreational Forest, expanded trails in Bracken Mountain Preserve, and a beautiful creek in the Green River Game Lands. There’s also the all-time favorite Bearwallow Mountain with its 360-degree views over the mountains and countryside we’re working to protect.

These hikes will take you to some of our region’s “greatest hits,” as well as hidden gems where you may have the woods to yourself. If you’re into mountain biking, you have the option of biking some of these trails. And if you love to swim, fish, or just be near the water, five of these hikes take you to rivers, lakes, or waterfalls.

- Only hikes that you’ve done after Oct. 1, 2021 count toward Hiking Challenge 6.
- You can complete the hikes on your own or as a group.
