A young poet tells the inspiring story of his migration at the age of nine from El Salvador to the United States in this “gripping memoir” (NPR) of bravery, hope, and finding family.

Haywood County native Donald Davis was born into a world rich in stories and folklore. Although well versed in the more traditional Jack Tales, Davis was most interested in the stories of his own family and friends, as well as places of origin. He used these stories to enhance his sermons during a celebrated 25-year career as a Methodist Minister. Later he began telling stories at regional festivals, and upon retirement, became a notable author and performer.

The author of 18 books and 40 original recordings, Donald Davis is indeed a national treasure. He is the recipient of both The Circle of Excellence and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Storytelling Network.

Please join us at The 2nd Act in Hendersonville, NC for our first monthly book club meeting that strives to read books that create a closer knit and more inclusive community! We will meet virtually and in person monthly to discuss a book, so read the book and then join in the discussion in person or online every third Thursday. All are welcome! Named after Dorothy Brooke, the founder of the Brooke family of charities, the orchestra, directed by Kyle Elgarten, Assistant Conductor for the Palm Beach Symphony, is comprised of leading musicians from North and South Carolina.

The World Trails Film Festival is a unique event showcasing the best short and feature films centering the stories of trails from around the globe. Join us as we bring it to UNC Asheville (premiering for the first time on the East Coast of the United States) to celebrate why trails matter.

This community-building event will support trails locally and globally by fundraising equally for two leading trail organizations, the first of which is the Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards, a local nonprofit equipping people to steward our wild landscapes, and the World Trails Ambassadors, a program of the World Trails Network.

Doors open at 6 pm, Program begins at 7pm and entry will be limited after 7:15 pm, during the screening. Program will include an intermission and ends at 9:30 pm.

Adam Rothman, professor of History at Georgetown University, will be speaking on Georgetown’s history of enslavement and his current research on Thursday, October 26 at 7 p.m. at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center, Manheimer Room.

Rothman is the director of the Center for the Study of Slavery and Its Legacies and co-editor of the recent book “Facing Georgetown’s History: A Reader on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation” which details the university’s history of enslavement and its recent efforts to confront its past.

In “I Came As a Shadow,” John Thompson writes about Georgetown’s slaveholding legacy, especially the sale of 272 enslaved people in 1883 that was made to save the financially struggling university. Aside from tracing the descendants of the 272 individuals, Rothman’s research explores how institutions and communities confront their shameful pasts.

This event is part of the Common Word Community Read series, a set of lectures and discussions centered around a shared text with the goal of engaging a collective educational experience. The program is curated by Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author, alumnus of the class of 2000, and UNC Asheville’s Executive Director of Literary Arts. The selection for fall 2023 is “I Came As a Shadow” an autobiography by the late John Thompson, the head basketball coach at Georgetown University from 1972 to 1999, where he won the NCAA championship in 1984.

This year, Continuum Tattoo Collective is taking its annual Halloween event to a whole new level, promising an immersive experience like no other.

CYBERDOME will transport attendees into a world of dystopian wonder, where they will be mesmerized by thrilling performances, incredible music, and jaw-dropping costumes. The event, set to take place on October 28th of 2023, will push the boundaries of imagination, creating an unforgettable evening of entertainment and fundraising for a worthy cause.

In an effort to enhance the event experience, CYBERDOME will feature a four-course dining buffet, signature cocktails, and an exciting costume contest with remarkable prizes. The Day of the Dead in Mexico is a holiday with complex Mayan and Aztec roots combined with Catholic and native customs that joyfully memorializes the dead ancestors. It is celebrated throughout the day and night. November 1st and 2nd. It is a very festive time when beloved family members, children, friends and even pets from the afterlife return to the land of living and are reunited with the living. Although close to Halloween, the Day of the Dead in Mexico is a colorful and joyful celebration welcoming the souls to be with the living.

Entertainment
Asheville is fortunate to have a local WNC Mexican organized cultural youth organization from the Emma area of West Asheville. The name of this performance troupe is Raices. Raices’ mission is to strengthen the cultural indigenous identity and traditions of US born children of Mexican descent, particularly of Hidalgo, Mexico. This area of Mexico is strongly represented in Asheville. These indigenous traditions and language of Otomi are slowly getting lost on their children growing up in modern American culture.
Therefore, Raices’ goal is to bring a positive influence in their children’s lives through the dance, art, and culture of Latin America. Composed of twenty 12–22-year-old youth, they will grace our Day of Dead fundraiser event in person with vibrant costumes and traditional Chiapan and Sinaloan dances.
