The Wyeths: Three Generations | Works from the Bank of America Collection provides a comprehensive survey of works by N. C. Wyeth, one of America’s finest illustrators; his son, Andrew, an important realist painter; his eldest daughter, Henriette, a realist painter; and Andrew’s son Jamie, a popular portraitist. Through the works of these artists from three generations of the Wyeth family, themes of American history, artistic techniques, and creative achievements can be explored. This exhibition will be on view in the Asheville Art Museum’s Explore Asheville Exhibition Hall February 12 through May 30, 2022.
N. C. Wyeth (1882–1945) has long been considered one of the nation’s leading illustrators. In the early 1900s, he studied with illustrator Howard Pyle in Delaware. In 1911, he built a house and studio in nearby Chadds Ford, PA. Later, he bought a sea captain’s house in Maine and in 1931 built a small studio, which he shared with his son, Andrew, and his daughters, Henriette and Carolyn. The exhibition includes illustrations for books by Robert Louis Stevenson and Washington Irving as well as historical scenes, seascapes, and landscapes.
Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) is one of the United States’ most popular artists, and his paintings follow the American Realist tradition. He was influenced by the works of Winslow Homer, whose watercolor technique he admired, as well as by the art of Howard Pyle and his father, N. C. While Andrew painted recognizable images, his use of line and space often imbue his works with an underlying abstract quality. The exhibition includes important works from the 1970s and 1980s as well as recent paintings.
Henriette Wyeth (1907–1997) was the eldest daughter of N.C. Wyeth and an older sister to Andrew Wyeth. Like other members of her family, her painting style was realist in a time when Impressionism and Abstraction were popular in the early 20th century. She studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was an acclaimed portraitist, though perhaps not as widely known as her father and brother. Most notably she painted the portrait of First Lady, Pat Nixon, which is in the collection of The White House.
Jamie Wyeth (born 1946), like his father and grandfather, paints subjects of everyday life, in particular the landscapes, animals, and people of Pennsylvania and Maine. In contrast to his father—who painted with watercolor, drybrush, and tempera—Jamie works in oil and mixed media, creating lush painterly surfaces. The 18 paintings in the exhibition represent all periods of his career.

Useful and Beautiful: Silvercraft by William Waldo Dodge features a selection of functional silver works by Dodge drawn from the Museum’s Collection. Organized by the Asheville Art Museum and curated by Whitney Richardson, associate curator, this exhibition will be on view in the Debra McClinton Gallery at the Museum from February 23 through October 17, 2022.
William Waldo Dodge Jr. (Washington, DC 1895–1971 Asheville, NC) moved to Asheville in 1924 as a trained architect and a newly skilled silversmith. When he opened for business promoting his handwrought silver tableware, including plates, candlesticks, flatware (spoons, forks, and knives), and serving dishes, he did so in a true Arts and Crafts tradition. The aesthetics of the style were dictated by its philosophy: an artist’s handmade creation should reflect their hard work and skill, and the resulting artwork should highlight the material from which it was made. Dodge’s silver often displayed his hammer marks and inventive techniques, revealing the beauty of these useful household goods.
The Arts and Crafts style of England became popular in the United States in the early 1900s. Asheville was an early adopter of the movement because of the popularity and abundance of Arts and Crafts architecture in neighborhoods like Biltmore Forest, Biltmore Village, and the area around The Grove Park Inn. The title of this exhibition was taken from the famous quotation by one of the founding members of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, William Morris, who said, “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Not only did Dodge follow this suggestion; he contributed to American Arts and Crafts silver’s relevancy persisting almost halfway into the 20th century.
“It has been over 15 years since the Museum exhibited its collection of William Waldo Dodge silver and I am looking forward to displaying it in the new space with some new acquisitions added,” said Whitney Richardson, associate curator. Learn more at ashevilleart.org.

ccess the Groove – Celebrating Disability and Neurodiversity is a benefit concert, art fair, and inclusive community gathering on May 22nd from 1-5 pm at the Grey Eagle Music Hall in Asheville, NC.
The event will feature performances by a stellar lineup of musicians from Johnson City and Asheville with and without disabilities including Jordan Scheffer and Chinobay, Mad Mike Martinez , Will Gott, DIYabled, and Lavender Latte.
A variety of artists, entrepreneurs, and local agencies that act toward disability justice, equity, and inclusion will also be on-site selling wares and sharing information about their work. Vendors include Open Hearts Art Center, Madam Clutterbuckets Neurodiverse Universe, DIYabled, Austin Shreds, Bo Fisher, FIRST Resource Center, Access ETSU, and more.
Proceeds will help support Access ETSU, a new inclusive higher education program for students with intellectual disabilities at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. In addition to raising crucial funds for program sustainability, Access ETSU will also be congratulating their first-ever graduate and second-ever full cohort of incoming students.
The Grey Eagle Taqueria will be open during the event, offering authentic and fresh Latin-American cuisine. There will also be a raffle with lots of local goodies available.

It’s a suggested minimum donation of $15 for entry, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
The Art League will host a meeting for members and guests at the Johnson Farm on May 22 from 1 – 3 pm. Tours of the farm, demonstrations by the Heritage Weavers and Art League Fiber artists will take place throughout the meeting. Ice cream will be served. All are welcome.
The League of Women Voters of Asheville-Buncombe County will be celebrating the installation of a roadside marker honoring Helen Morris Lewis.
Helen Morris Lewis was the President of the first women’s suffrage association in North Carolina founded at the Patton home in 1894. The marker is the result of a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s “Votes for Women National Trail” and administered by the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites (https://ncwhs.org) in honor of the centennial of women’s suffrage in the United States. Jo Nicholas, President of the LWVNC and Katherine Cutshall, Pack Memorial Library Manager of Buncombe County Special Collections, will be our speakers.
A brief ceremony and marker dedication will begin at 1:30 pm. The Patton Parker House (an Asheville Historic Landmark) will be open with displays about the life of Helen Morris Lewis, Mayor Patton (a suffrage movement supporter), and our League’s Suffragette Exhibit. We will safely meet and greet. Event is free to the public. Easy and free parking is next-door.
As a special treat, the Girl Scouts Peaks to Piedmont Council has approved a Helen Morris Lewis patch as proposed by our League. Scouts can earn credit by attending this event and Girl Scout cookies will be featured refreshments.
Jazz Sunday at One World Brewing West is a modern jazz jam held every Sunday afternoon from 1-4pm. Previously known as Jazz Monday, the jam has been running non stop since July, 2018 at the West Asheville brewery and is hosted weekly by The Fully Vaccinated Jazz Trio, consisting of Ray Ring on guitar, Jason DeCristofaro on drums, piano and vibraphone, and Connor Law on bass. Jazz Sunday typically features a guest artist for a short set and then welcomes jazz musicians of all levels to sit in for the remainder of the afternoon on One World’s spacious outdoor stage.
See the WNC Nature Center like never before, behind the scenes! The tour includes learning about how we feed and care for the animals (including the predators, such as the mountain lion), an animal enrichment session, and exclusive interactions with the keepers that care for our animals. Tickets include admission for the day and takes place mainly outdoors.
The tour is for ages 14 and up. Masks are encouraged indoors, and required when are near the animals.

John and his daughter Caitlyn are birders. As they scan the skies over their backyard in suburban Maryland looking for elusive birds, years go by. Relationships begin and end. Children grow up and parents age. The climate and the world change in small and vast ways. Birds of North America is a heartfelt examination of a father and daughter’s relationship over the course of a decade as they struggle to understand the parts of one another that defy understanding.
We require proof of vaccination for indoor performances for everyone over the age of 12. We are not accepting negative Covid tests for entry in lieu of vaccinations. Proof may be presented via a digital photo or physical copy of your vaccination card, and must be accompanied with a photo ID. Proof of vaccination is not required for children ages 0-11.
We are selling tickets at reduced capacity. We will continue to require masks to be worn by audience members. The performers are vaccinated and will be performing on stage unmasked

GreenWorks’ Mind Your Plastic May Benefit Concert is an integral part of this year’s month-long Mind Your Plastic May (MYPM) campaign for community-wide change. The goal of the event is to raise funds which will be used to distribute useful, impactful, and sustainable items to populations in the Asheville community who may not otherwise have access, or whose access may be limited, and to explore other creative & impactful ways to reduce single-use plastic in our communities. This event is family-friendly and will also include local food & beer vendors, artisans, and much more!
What Is Mind Your Plastic May?
In 2019, GreenWorks challenged local community members to practice 30 days of #goingplasticfree. Over 400 people stepped up, and in 30 days we were able to divert an estimated 6750 lbs of trash from the landfill. We are bringing back the 30-day challenge. (And there will be locally-sourced, plastic-free prizes for participating of course!) Plus, all month long we’ll share plastic-related facts, tips for reducing your plastic usage, DIY videos, and more. Our goal is to foster knowledge and encourage mindfulness of plastic consumption and disposal.

Compared with talents such as Janis Joplin and Joss Stone, Lauren Anderson is a soulful rocker that leaves you hanging on every note. Originally from Chicago, she has been regionally touring since 2014, has opened for artists, such as Beth Hart, Samantha Fish and Walter Trout. Now based in Nashville, TN, she recently represented the Nashville Blues & Roots Alliance in Memphis, TN in the Galaxie Showcase during the 2019 International Blues Challenge. She has also played at notable stages such as the Bonita Blues Festival, City Winery Nashville, Uptown Theater, Knuckleheads Saloon & River Music Experience. Now promoting her third EP, “Wild & Free”, to be released in the summer of 2019, she’s back on the road, bringing her unique blend of rock music that will touch your soul all across the Nation.

Note: This version of The Giver features a cast of middle school students from our Tanglewood Youth Production Class.
About the show: Jonas’ world is perfect. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war or fear or pain. There are also no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. But when Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training from The Giver — to receive and keep the memories of the community. Now Jonas will learn the truth about life — and discover what it means to grow up, to grow wise, and to take control of your own destiny.

Andrew Feiler is a photographer and author and a fifth generation Georgian. Having grown up Jewish in Savannah, he has been shaped by the rich complexities of the American South. Feiler has long been active in civic life. He has helped create over a dozen community initiatives, serves on multiple not-for-profit boards, and is an active advisor to numerous elected officials and political candidates. His art is an extension of his civic values.
Feiler’s newest book of photography, A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald, Booker T. Washington, and the 4,978 Schools that Changed America, was recently published by the University of Georgia Press. This work is the first comprehensive photodocumentary of the program created by Tuskegee Institute principal Booker T. Washington and Sears, Roebuck & Company president Julius Rosenwald. From 1912 to 1937, this collaboration built 4,978 schools for African American children across 15 southern and border states and transformed America.
Feiler’s Rosenwald school images have received a number of early honors. Photolucida named them a 2020 Top 50 portfolio and Photoville selected them for “The Fence,” an outdoor exhibition displayed internationally in eleven cities. They were also part of the Currents 2020 exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. The solo exhibition of this work is now on tour and is on view at the Charlotte Museum of History in Charlotte, January 15, 2022 – June 18, 2022.
Feiler’s earlier book, Without Regard to Sex, Race, or Color, was also published by the University of Georgia Press. Focused on the largely abandoned campus of an historically black college, this body of artistic documentary photography offers a new way into the debate raging in our society about the essential role education has played as the foundation of the American Dream.
Feiler’s photographs have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Smithsonian, Slate, Architect, Preservation, Eye on Photography, Lenscratch, Oxford American, The Bitter Southerner, The Forward, numerous other magazines and newspapers, and on CBS News and NPR. His work has been displayed in galleries and museums including solo exhibitions at such venues as the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, and International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro, NC. His work is in public and private collections including that of Atlanta University Center and Emory University.
Feiler earned his bachelor’s in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a master’s in modern history from Oxford University and a master’s in business administration from Stanford University. Feiler’s work can be seen at andrewfeiler.com.

mainstay of American roots music for more than 30 years, Michelle Malone has built an award-winning career as a songwriter, road warrior, and modern-day guitar hero. Her music is ingrained in the sounds of the south, mixing the rebellious stomp of roadhouse rock & roll with the raw grit of blues, the holy-rolling rasp of gospel, the slow-motion swagger of country-soul, and the organic warmth of folk music. Proudly based in Atlanta, Georgia, she’s always worn her influences on her sleeve — but her music is unmistakably her own.

The story of the Andrews sisters. This musical follows the Andrews sisters from their early days on the road through their rise as recording stars to entertaining American GI’s overseas. Featuring songs such as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” This show is guaranteed to knock your socks off.
Starbright is the story of Grace, an astrophysicist who lost her daughter Abby nearly a year ago. As Grace’s life spins out of control, Abby appears to her and begins making predictions about the cosmos. Grace must determine if her daughter’s appearance is a sign of her dwindling sanity, or proof that there’s more to the universe than even she understands.
When Grace’s visions from beyond the grave start seeping into her reality, husband Calvin and aunt Margaret must put aside their own struggles and come together to assess Grace’s stability and safety. In light of her family history of mental health issues, can Grace persuade them to trust in her conviction that Abby is speaking to her?
Starbright is Sean David Robinson’s first full-length play. It was selected by the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival in New York City and made its original debut Off-Broadway in 2018. Starbright was named the winner of the 2018 North Carolina New Play Project and the Centre Stage New Play Festival in Greenville, SC. It was also shortlisted as a semi-finalist for the inaugural New Works Festival at the Garry Marshall Theatre in Burbank, CA.
Directed by Ashleigh Goff, Starbright features Courtney DeGennaro Robinson as Grace, Scott Voloshin as Calvin, Ivy Voloshin as Abby, and Janet Oliver as Margaret.
