We have been an active club since 1924. We currently have 65 active members of all collecting interests and meet once per month to share programs, auctions, ideas, buy, sell & trade stamps, and just plain camaraderie. Many of our members have extensive collecting, exhibiting, or speaking experience, and discussions are always interesting and rewarding. New and developing collectors will find an audience ready and willing to help with expanding one’s knowledge and enjoyment of the hobby.

Western North Carolina is in an interesting geographical location: we get visitors from the north during the winter, from the south during the summer, and many people who decide they’ve had enough of either of those climates to move here permanently! We urge visitors of any age with philatelic interests to join us, even if only for a short time. We may even convince you to enjoy our region full-time!

Membership

We welcome collectors of all ages and interests.
Dues are $10.00 a year and includes our bimonthly newsletter “The Smoky Mountain Philatelist”, complete membership list that includes “what we collect” and notices about our meetings with urging to attend and share your interest with us.

BREACH OF PEACE
Oct 17 @ 2:00 pm
North Carolina Stage Company w/ Virtual option

written and performed by Mike Wiley

On May 24, 1961, 19-year old Jean Thompson boarded a Trailways bus in Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New Orleans – and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders took up the mantle to desegregate buses, following the path of the first brave few. Mobs bloodily assaulted many. Others were arrested. Wiley’s drama BREACH OF PEACE is based on true accounts of surviving participants of the Freedom Rides and others involved in the early struggle for African-American equality. This solo-play is a living monument to those remarkable young men and women of various races, religions and backgrounds who rose to face the dangers of fighting for just and equal treatment for all.

Discretionary Content: Mature themes, language, sensitive material, descriptions of violence, recorded gunshot sound.

Oct 17 @ 2:00 pm
Carol Belk Theatre

For the first time since early 2020, UNC Asheville’s TheatreUNCA will return to the stage in front of a live, in-person audience with Everyone, a modern retelling of a 15th-century morality play. The multi-disciplinary, one-of-a-kind theatrical performance will feature movement, acting, spoken word, song, and music led by a trio of directors. Performances will take place outdoors October 14-17 in front of UNC Asheville’s Belk Theatre. Tickets are free and available to reserve now.

“The combined pandemics of COVID-19 and racism have unearthed a collective grappling with questions related to mortality, morality, and the value of human life,” says UNC Asheville’s Drama Department Chair and Associate Professor Lise Kloeppel. “An original adaptation of Everyman seemed to check all the boxes for what we were hoping to accomplish with the first show of our mainstage season.”

Inspired by the 15th-century morality play, Everyman, and infused with our shared experiences under the pandemic, Everyone explores the age-old story of facing death, taking account, experiencing isolation and resentment, making amends, and reemerging into the world with a joyous rebirth. Directors Stephanie Hickling Beckman (spoken word), Carolina Perez (music), and Aaron Snook (movement), along with a curated three-ensemble cast, wrote and adapted the script for this unique event with the collective goal of bringing audiences out of pandemic-related isolation and back into the community.

“More pageant than play, Everyone will be an outdoor celebration of the journey we’ve all been on and a hopeful catharsis of what we have learned,” reflects Snook. “Under the pandemic,  we’ve all had to confront death in a new way, take a hard look in the mirror, and gain a new perspective on how to live life. This production is a ritualized journey towards the hope of rebirth.”

“This production explores all that the pandemic brought to light in regards to the best and worst of humanity, and how plagues do not discriminate, we are all in this together although we are each going through our own individual nightmares and struggles,” says UNC Asheville student Izzy Mayfield, a biology major/ drama minor performing in the movement ensemble.

The student cast includes Wyeth Bishop (Music Ensemble), Noah Brackett (Music Ensemble), Stephen Clark (Spoken Word Ensemble), Kiarra Driscoll (Acting Ensemble), Izzy Mayfield (Acting Ensemble), Alex Mbuthia (Music Ensemble), Kai Moskow (Music Ensemble), Zoe Newton (Spoken Word Ensemble), Gabe Nicholson (Movement Ensemble), Miracle Okoro (Spoken Word Ensemble), Samantha Schroder (Acting Ensemble), L.A. Setu (Movement & Music Ensembles), and Layla Zeferino (Movement & Music Ensembles), with Brónagh O’Shea (Stage
Manager) and Alex McFadden and Maggie Schall (Assistant Stage Managers) in production roles.

HARVEY
Oct 17 @ 2:00 pm
HART’s Main Stage

Elwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey — whom Elwood describes as a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister, Veta, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed but things… don’t go as planned. This Pulitzer Prize winning play is considered to be one of the greatest comedies ever written. Of course, it all gets sorted out in the end, but there are many surprises (as well as comic doses of wisdom) along the way, as everyone questions just what exactly is real.

In the quaint village of Sleepy hollow, stories of wonder and strangeness surround the legend of a mighty headless Hessian. RAIL: The Railroad and Incarcerated Laborer Memorial Project

The construction of the Mountain Division of the Western North Carolina Railroad is widely considered one of the greatest human accomplishments in regards to both engineering and construction ever undertaken at the time it occurred. The project took place over a period of several years in the late 1800s. Many people are aware that the railroad provided the first dependable access to and from much of Western North Carolina for the rest of the state as well as much of the nation. Many also know the names of some of those who were instrumental in seeing through the completion of this ambitious project. Names such as Colonel Alexander Boyd Andrews, of Andrews’ Geyser fame. However, what most people are unaware of is that at least 95% of the labor which built the railroad across the Blue Ridge Escarpment was completed by inmates from the North Carolina State Penitentiary… and approximately 98% of those inmates were African American men… the majority of whom were unjustly imprisoned…

BLOODBATH: VICTORIA’S SECRET

Written and Directed by Jamieson Ridenhour

As “Tori Piper,” Victoria Leigh was once the darling of mid-to-late eighties low-budget horror—she was the go-to final girl of a dozen or so B-level slashers. Then she filmed the cult classic Sorority Bloodbath, a cinema verité horror film plagued by rumors of sinister occurrences on-set. Then she vanished, fueling a subset of fan conspiracy theories.

In 1999, Victoria Leigh is planning a quiet New Year’s Eve dinner with her girlfriend, but things aren’t working out. People keep showing up at the apartment, and some of them may have sinister intentions. Deadly intentions. Add in a crazed young wanna-be agent and Tori’s former lover / co-star who has hidden motivations of her own, and the pressure and terror mounts quickly for the former scream queen.

But as the night lengthens and the body count grows, more questions arise. Who is really the hunter and who the prey? And what really happened on the set of Sorority Bloodbath all those years ago? To what lengths will a final girl go to survive?
