Healthy Rivers equal Healthy Communities. RiverLink’s Watershed Resources program works to improve water quality in the French Broad River and its tributaries. These waterways support critical wildlife habitat for many species, such as the hellbender salamander and rainbow trout. Our local economies thrive on water-based recreational tourism. The French Broad River watershed also provides drinking water for many communities. These things are true only if the water is clean. Our Watershed Resources program uses a combination of initiatives, including on the ground projects and community outreach to improve and protect water quality.

PROMOTING HEALTH AND HEALING
We understand the disruption of daily life and social distancing can be incredibly difficult. For many of us, daily activities, social groups, and routines dissipated overnight.
In an effort to help keep us all connected, our fitness instructors put together a series of home workouts too. Going forward we will be continuing to provide active resources. We hope you enjoy these workouts, made just for you, by your friendly and familiar YWCA instructors.

The exhibit is on loan from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and has been supplemented with artifacts from the Smith-McDowell House collection. Entrance to the exhibit is included with Smith-McDowell House admission – and is always free for members – and runs through May 16, 2020.
The exhibit seeks to put the local men and women who served in context with the larger events happening in North Carolina, the United States, and the world. In the exhibit, visitors will find displays and interactive elements telling the stories of just a few of our hometown heroes.

Our featured scientist this week is the Western North Carolina Nature Center’s very own, Tori Duval. Tori will share with us the basics of animal conservation and answer all your nature center questions. The Skyland Library will host J.R. the Therapy Dog on the 1st Friday of each month. Kids are invited to stop by between 2:30-3:30 pm to practice their reading skills with a gentle, patient and adorable canine friend. J.R. is a certified therapy dog and he can’t wait to meet you!
Grassroots Aid Partnership (GAP) plans to serve free, plant-based food every Friday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1022 Haywood Road.

This four-part class led by Learning & Engagement Assistant Paige Taylor explores natural and artificial lighting approaches using digital photography. Through a series of weekly assignments, hone your observation skills, and capture landscapes, portraits, and more in a variety of lighting situations. Use images from the Museum’s Collection and other sources for inspiration. Class time includes instruction, group shares, and discussions; individual preparation between classes includes responding to weekly photo prompts, short readings, and journaling. This virtual class is designed with beginners, hobbyists, and those with some photography experience in mind.MAY 6, 13, 20, & 27—Wednesdays, 6–8pm

Find your zen during this stressful time. Miranda Peterson of Asheville yoga hike company Namaste in Nature has developed a series of free, online videos to help you relax. From a 10-minute sensory meditation to a gentle, immune boosting yoga asana practice, these videos are designed to “calm and support your immune system.”

This movement, promoting the
elimination of the shame associated with society’s standards of beauty and respect for all
body shapes and sizes, will take place on Wednesday, May 6th.
The NEDA Network is a partnership between NEDA and other mission-aligned
organizations dedicated to advancing the field of eating disorders and building a
community of support. With nearly 20 member organizations, this network provides a
unified voice of strength and advocacy. May 6th will mark the NEDA Network’s second
national #NoDietDay social media campaign, encouraging the rejection of diet culture.
We invite you to join us in promoting healthy relationships with food, movement, and

This session is appropriate for professionals and the general public. Becca will walk
attendees through identifying diet culture and diet mindset. She will explore the
neurobiological effects of restrictive dieting and we will leave with an understanding of
the psychological, emotional, and physical impact of dieting and how it often leads to
damaging disordered eating patterns. Attendees will take away cognitive, experiential,
and behavioral interventions they can use to reclaim a more balanced relationship with
food and body image. “This is an important and timely workshop that will address dieting
and its potential for unhealthy behaviors and health outcomes,” says Simone Seitz,
Executive Director of CRC for ED and Chair of the NEDA Network.

A video-based program that guides aspiring hide tanners through every step of tanning a deer hide.
Natalie Bogwalker
Natalie is a hide tanner, craftswoman, builder, teacher, mom, and gardener. She founded Wild Abundance 10 years ago because of her passion for sharing real, practical skills that get people closer to the Earth. Hide tanning was one of the first earthskills that she learned, and it changed her life profoundly. That was over 15 years ago! Since then she’s tanned uncountable hides, but more importantly, she’s taught hide tanning to hundreds of students.
Natalie knows what usually trips people up who are new to hide tanning. In this online course she shares a thorough, step-by-step guide to hide tanning, including numerous tips and tricks that will help you succeed.

Since 2010, the Asheville Area Arts Council, in partnership with the City of Asheville, has convened the Creative Sector Summit– the region’s only creative industry-specific annual conference.
This year’s conference will kick-off on Thursday, April 30th with a Dinner in the Foundry Hotel’s Savoy Ballroom. Guests will be presented with the results of this year’s Creative Sector Survey, hear from the city and county about how they support the arts, and learn from the director of the North Carolina Arts Council about the current state of the arts in NC.
The Summit will take place on May 1st and 2nd at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. Friday will focus more heavily on Creative Placemaking, with a keynote presentation by the leading consulting group in this field Forecast Public Art. On Saturday we will shift to Arts Education with a keynote presentation from Ingenuity, a nonprofit working to increase arts access for all students in Chicago Public Schools. Both themes will be addressed through the lens of Equity and Inclusion. The full conference line-up will be posted in mid-March.
