The eighth annual CiderFest NC fundraiser will be held in a brand-new format this fall that offers loyal guests the chance to celebrate, sample and savor cider safely and responsibly.
While the large annual festival will not be offered this fall in light of current health concerns, the event will continue this year through CiderFest Tours: small-group curated tours of three Asheville cideries that are being offered in partnership with local business Leap Frog Tours.
The tours will allow participants to visit three of Asheville’s cideries — Noble Cider, Urban Orchard Cider Company – West and TreeRock Social Cider House & Mead Bar — for intimate, small-group tasting sessions to sample unique takes on the craft beverage on each of the locations. Proceeds will be shared between Leap Frog Tours, the three participating cideries and Green Built Alliance.
To offer the largest number of people the opportunity to participate, the four-hour tours will be offered from 3 to 7 p.m. on every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in October.
Tours can be reserved for groups of 2 to 14 individuals, and bookings open up today. To prioritize safety in light of COVID-19, all tours will be private without combining reservations from separate parties. (Visit our website or Leap Frog’s booking page for a full list of COVID-19 precautions being taken for the tours.)
The cost is $85 per person. The price includes a tasting at each cidery, a souvenir CiderFest tasting glass, and transportation by Leap Frog Tours from Aloft Hotel in downtown Asheville.
Since the event has sold out in recent years, people are encouraged to book their tours early. For more information and to book a tour, visit www.ciderfestnc.com.

Mel Ryane, in a return engagement to Flatiron Writers Room, will teach this workshop for writers wishing to read their work aloud in digital format.
The workshop will begin on Day One with a 3-hour course on technique. Writers will learn to scan text, examine rhythm and pace, choose those juicy words, prep their bodies and voices, play to the video camera, properly use lighting and, above all, lift their work into a compelling reading. This workshop has proven invaluable as an editing tool. Prep, practice, present.
On Day Two, Mel will coach writers one-on-one in 20-minute sessions on their readings—you will learn valuable information from the guidance she gives you and your classmates. Day Three, as needed depending on class size, will continue as Day Two.

This event will benefit Asheville Music School’s many programs, including outreach, scholarships, and lessons, and help our mission of strengthening our communities through music education.
The school has been weathering the COVID storm, but it’s been a big challenge not having our large fundraising events. We need some extra help this Fall from our supporters!
The concert is on a beautiful, spacious property in North Asheville, with plenty of room to lay out a blanket, enjoy a picnic, and crack a bottle of wine. Bring some camp chairs, if you like, and bring the family – or leave the kids home and have a date night!

**A tribute to Nina Simone
Room Twenty–Seven formed in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, in a classroom above a historic chapel at their college, (room #27.) After their initial performances of 80s rock covers in music business classes, they quickly recognized their chemistry and began writing their own music together, performing for anyone who would lend an ear through student events, open mic nights, and house shows.

Even among the pantheon of music’s finest artists, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honkytonks, rural schoolhouse stages, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry to the present-day culture-buzz of viral videos and digital streams, Del is the living link. With sons Ronnie and Rob, the Del McCoury Band continues to represent in a larger, growing musical community a peerless torchbearer for the entire sweep and scope of bluegrass history…a history that he’s still shaping daily.

Tuesday, September 22nd Governor Roy Cooper announced that some NC small businesses experiencing disruptions to their operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible and benefit from a $40 million relief program to help offset fixed costs like rent, mortgage interests, and utility bills.
The NC Mortgage, Utility, and Rent Relief (MURR) is administered by the NC Department of Commerce and can provide up to $20,000 in relief funds per qualifying business location. Business applicants from certain industry sectors that have not been able to operate during COVID-19 may apply for up to two of their businesses.
Applicants can apply for up to four months of mortgage interest or rent expenses, and utility expenses. The help offers relief for some of the fixed costs a business cannot easily control on its own. Applications to the program should open next week and will be addressed on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must certify that they were closed during the period of April 1 to July 31, 2020; they expect to be able to operate after the COVID crisis has passed; and they have not been reimbursed by any other federal source for the expenses they seek to reimburse through this program.
Eligible applicants include:

The BOOsters are happy little friendly ghosts sold throughout the month of October in area banks, restaurants, cleaners, convenience stores, and many other businesses. For only $1.00, anyone can purchase a BOOster, place his or her name or business card on it and have it displayed. This is a great way to decorate area businesses for the holiday while providing fun, friendly competition, and funds to help continue the outreach of the Eblen Charities.
Eblen Charitable Group Pumpkin Sales: Much like the BOOster sales, these bright paper pumpkins are sold for $1.00 during the month of October in area schools and Ingles Markets. This program sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, Ingle’s Markets, Pepsi, and Clear Channel radio stations benefits the programs of the Eblen Charities and helps provide a community program to the area schools with the premise of children helping children. Schools also have the opportunity to win prizes and equipment for their school. The school with the most over all sales is awarded the Frank Lewis Memorial Award, named in memory of our long time friend and Buncombe County educator, Frank Lewis.
