Written and Performed by Award-Winning Playwright and Actor, Mike Wiley
Co-presented by NC Stage and the YMI Cultural Center
*Please note: All performances of Tired Souls will take place at the YMI Cultural Institute at 39 S. Market St. Downtown Asheville*
Tired Souls opens in Montgomery, Alabama on December 1, 1955 – the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white man. Her determination was the catalyst that inspired Montgomery’s black citizens to abandon all travel on city buses until they were no longer forced to sit in the back or stand when a white person boarded. But there were others who came before Mrs. Parks and laid the groundwork for this pivotal moment. Tired Souls introduces audiences to Jo Ann Robinson, Claudette Colvin, and others so instrumental in lighting a fire under the Civil Rights movement and changing the course of U.S. history forever.
Join us for a Q&A with playwright and performer Mike Wiley following each performance.

Ribbon cutting invites families, pets and neighbors to celebrate new community spaces, local art and free treats
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 4, 2025) –Tanger Outlets Asheville will officially unveil its brand-new dog park and children’s play area on Saturday, Sept. 13, inviting the community to gather for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Guests can look forward to free treats for kids and pet owners, plus an afternoon filled with fun, connection and celebration.
Designed as a hub for families and neighbors, the spaces highlight Tanger’s commitment to creating communal experiences that go beyond shopping. The dog park offers green space for pups to run and play, complete with shaded seating for owners and a convenient watering station. Nearby, little ones can explore an elevated walking trail, perch on whimsical bear-shaped seating and enjoy picnic tables perfect for family time outdoors.
Adding to the charm, colorful murals from Asheville artists Gus Cutty and Kathryn Crawford bring the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains to life on site, creating vibrant backdrops for community gatherings.
This event is free and open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to bring the whole family – two-legged and four – for the festivities. Free treats for kids and pet owners while supplies last.
This event is FREE and open to the public.

The 16th West Asheville Garden Stroll is Saturday, September 13 from 11 AM to 4 PM. It features 13 diverse gardens in the Falconhurst neighborhood, north of Haywood Road between Mitchell Avenue and Louisiana. Stroll Guides with a map and garden descriptions will be available from 11:00 until 3:30 at the parking lot across from West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Road. (Note to regular attendees: there’s no kickoff program this year.)
The Garden Stroll is free, and all are welcome to join in this community event, rain or shine. However, leave your four-footed friends at home — dogs are not allowed in the gardens.
In keeping with our “stroll” concept, we encourage you to park at one of the WAGS-designated lots on Haywood Road and walk or bike the 2.5 mile route.
This year’s gardens include a permaculture “grass to food” yard with all kinds of edibles; formal designs and eclectic ones that have evolved over time; a “photographer’s paradise;” a large Bountiful Cities community garden hidden among residential streets; whimsical yard art; and of course, chickens. You’ll see new and mature gardens as well as works-in-progress, all offering the chance to chat with friendly and enthusiastic gardeners.
Our theme, Entwined, was inspired by the amazing interconnectedness of nature. In a healthy garden the plants, insects, birds, fungi and soil bacteria form an interdependent community that allows them all to thrive. The same is true in a healthy neighborhood. After Helene, the Falconhurst community — like many neighborhoods in WNC — grew even more entwined, as neighbors gathered around the well at the small farm to collect water and share necessities, information, and good vibes. Let’s all work to make our communities and our gardens more “entwined!”
