Single tickets will be available online to the general public beginning April 1. In early May, the BMC Box Office opens and remains open throughout the 2020 summer season.

Described as “the closest to ABBA you’ll ever get,” Abba The Concert brings one of the 20^th century’s greatest pop groups back to life with their dazzling performances of all the groundbreaking Swedish act’s greatest hits, including “Mamma Mia,” “S.O.S,” “Waterloo,” “Dancing Queen,” and many more. ABBA The Concert visits Brevard as part of its popular BMC Presents series, which brings a diverse range of non-classical artists to the festival stage. The Fantasticks

The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, and their two fathers who try to keep them apart. The narrator, El Gallo, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The lovers fall in love, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that, “without a hurt, the heart is hollow.” The story is punctuated by a series of catchy, memorable songs, many of which have become classics.

The Fantasticks is directed by Mark Jones with music direction by Rob Blackwell and choreography by Jessica Garland Lowe. Coincidentally, Mark appeared onstage in ACT’s 1998 production of The Fantasticks!

“It’s been about 20 years since I played Matt on the ACT stage. I was a young, inexperienced actor, and person, at that time,” Mark said. “But now I am able to revisit the show with much more experience and maturity. I know much more about love, loss and heartbreak than I did at the age of 24.”

“Love Your Body Month” YOGA

February is “Love Your Body Month” and Epiphany Wellness Center is proud partner with the Western North Carolina Chapter of iadep (International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals) and YAM (Yoga and Massage) to educate the community about positive body image, the dangers of disordered eating, and Health at Every Size. YAM is a yoga and massage studio that strives to create a safe space for all members of the community to explore how body movement, breathing techniques, positive body awareness, and meditation can manage stress and anxiety and lead to a more balanced way of life.

Epiphany Wellness Center offers outpatient services for those struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating, as well as trauma, anxiety, and depression. In addition, Epiphany offers groups that range from mindfulness and stress reduction to emotional eating, as well as a veterans’ support group.

Asheville Mardi Gras Parade February 23

The 13th annual Asheville Mardi Gras parade will take place on February 23 in South Slope and we’re looking for parade day volunteers. The Asheville Mardi Gras parade is an all-inclusive, family friendly, full-color spectacle that is fun, entertaining, full of music, floats, dancing and celebrating. Spectators receive beads and candy and the photo opportunities are always amazing.

Details include:

* About 20-25 volunteers needed for this rain or shine event. There will be 2 shifts, estimated to be from approx. 11a to 2/3p, and 2p to 5/6p.

*Setting up, manning and breaking down street barricades

*Assisting with krewe and float line up and timing as the parade begins

*Identifying parked cars that might need to be towed and checking for obstacles to smooth crowd control along the parade route.

*Coordinating with the Parade Logistics manager and city police

*Carrying 1 or 2 parade banners (Costumes optional but always encouraged!)

*Assisting with end of parade float disbursement

*Trash pick up following the parade set up and marching route. This is mostly paper trash and beads. It’s rarely more than a few bags total.

Returning barricades, cones, etc. to the post-parade collection point

Confirmed Volunteer perks include $10 gift card to Vortex Donuts & Coffee and a free beer at Catawba. Possibly more perks to come!

AMG is also seeking a Parade Day Logistics Manager as a PAID POSITION for Sunday, Feb. 23. Ideal person should have outdoor event coordination experience, flexibility and a good sense of humor. Duties include coordinating volunteers, ensuring cones and barricades are in place at all check points, answering any traffic/parked car/pedestrian concerns, acting as parade day primary contact for police and security and Mardi Gras leadership, coordinating compliance with City parade permit requirements, and helping ensure a timely start and finish to the parade. Candidate could plan to cover the parade route via bicycle or scooter or use walkie talkies to accomplish oversight of the .5 mile parade route. This position pays $125 for the day. Asheville Truffle Experience

The Asheville Truffle Experience will kick off at 5:00pm on Friday February 7^th, at the Benjamin Walls Gallery at 38 Broadway, with a welcome tasting featuring multiple truffled appetizers by Chef Anthony Cerrato, truffled ice cream by Ultimate, music by Aoife Clancy and Bill Elliott of Celtic ConFusion, wines by Benjamin Walls, and a chance to mingle and share stories with other true truffle aficionados.

Saturday morning, February 8th will begin with a Truffle Panel Seminar, and will feature several experts in the field of truffle history, cultivation, and usage. Saturday afternoon will continue with a culinary demo & tasting, followed by a Truffle Market at the Haywood Park Hotel Atrium, featuring truffle products, services, and seedlings, and lots of other cool trivia.

On Saturday evening, Chef Peter Crockett of Isa’s Bistro will provide guests with a selection of provocative dishes including Truffle-studded bone marrow parfait, Savory truffle honey-glazed bear claw, Truffle agnolotti with pork trotter consommé, Passion fruit granité, and a Black truffle trio of macaroon, mini chocolate éclair, and ice cream.

On Sunday, February 9^th, we will head out to the truffle orchard at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville, overseen by Dr. Jeanine Davis and Leonora Stefanile. There, we will witness a Lagotto romagnolo in action (Monza, accompanied by her trainer Lois Martin of the Truffle Dog Company), observe the brulée that has formed around host trees which have recently achieved their first production, and—with luck—unearth a few fresh specimens of Tuber melanosporum.

Pricing for the entire weekend is available in several packages. You may also register for individual sessions à la carte.

Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) 12 week course

The Asheville Police Department (APD) is now inviting residents to apply for the spring semester of the Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA). Participants in this free course will learn about the daily work and operations of APD, while also giving the department an opportunity to obtain valuable feedback from the community.

The course will begin on March 5. Sessions are held each Thursday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. for 12 weeks. The course is held at the Municipal Building, 100 Court Plaza, in downtown Asheville. Dinner is provided.

The course consists of basic classroom instruction, presentations and demonstrations of topics such as criminal investigations, constitutional and criminal law, use of force, departmental structure and defensive tactics. Participants will also be given the opportunity to ride along with an officer.

Those wishing to participate must apply and be accepted. You can submit an application online at this link. Applications are due Feb. 21.

Early Bird Registration Open for Senior Games and Silver Arts 2020

Each spring, hundreds of locals 50+ years-old enjoy participating in the Asheville-Buncombe Senior Games and Silver Arts. This year’s program will be held at locations throughout Buncombe County from Tuesday, April 14-Friday, May 15. Registration is $5 before March 9 or $10 after that date. Military veterans may register for free.

To register, fill out a registration form (see documents below) or register online at ncseniorgames.org. Archery and pickleball have registration deadline dates.

Sports include basketball, bocce, croquet, football throw, softball throw, golf, cycling, track and field, archery, cheerleading, bowling, swimming, billiards, badminton, cornhole, horseshoes, pickleball, racquetball, shuffleboard, tennis, and table tennis. Miniature golf, rowing, and team softball and basketball are new this year. Age categories start at 50 and increase at five year intervals.

Silver Arts categories are classified as Heritage (quilting, woodwork, crochet, basket weaving, jewelry, needlework, tole painting, weaving, knitting, pottery, stained glass, woodcarving, and woodturning), Visual (solo, small group, and large group), Performing, Literary (poem, short story, essay, and life experience), and Contemporary. Art pieces will be displayed at Buncombe County Libraries in April and May.

Environmental Education: RiverLink Summer Camps

Environmental Education is crucial to what RiverLink does. We believe that in order for someone to protect their environment, they must first understand it. Our education programs focus on getting students out in the watershed for hands-on experiential learning. We help students foster a love and appreciation for their water resources by allowing them to see, hear and interact with their local waterways. Farming = a long-term game. Traditionally, farming was a lifelong+ learning process, with families passing along experience, knowledge, and land accrued by multiple generations. Today, your experience in farming may be different. This program is part of a collaborative support system to help “incubate” farm businesses as they grow.

Do you have a farm business idea? Make it a reality! You are invited to join Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s Farmer Incubator Program, a “business incubator” for farm operations.

Roan Stewardship Director Marquette Crockett will present a photographic journey describing what makes the Roan so unique on Saturday (Feb. 8) at the Friends of Roan Mountain Winter Naturalists’ Rally. After lunch, join Marquette for a hike to see the high elevation balds of the Roan in person. We are SO grateful to all our partners and members who support conservation in this unique landscape. There truly is “No Place Like Roan”!

Guided Hikes: Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain

Interpretive Rangers are available to lead guided hikes, bird walks and wildflower walks for families and groups that visit Grandfather Mountain. To see the mountain in this whole new way, you can schedule an appointment by calling the interpretive ranger office at (828) 737-0833 or emailing [email protected].

Please note that walks and hikes are available for all ability levels, but hikes that take you into Grandfather Mountain’s backcountry require careful footwork, proper footwear and the ability to handle heights. All backcountry hikes require participants to traverse ladders and use cables to navigate steep sections of the trail.

Interpretive Rangers are available year-round (weather permitting) to lead guided hikes to:

MacRae Peak	($15 + park admission)
Attic Window	($25 + park admission)
Calloway Peak	($35 + park admission)

Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance, and a minimum of two participants per hike are required. For more information, please call (828) 737-0833.
