In a chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror, a small group of “psychically receptive” people are brought together in desolate and deserted Hill House, a brooding, mid-Victorian mansion known as a place of evil. The visitors have come to probe the secrets of the old house and to draw forth the mysterious powers that it is alleged to possess—powers which have brought madness, murder and suicide to those who have lived there in in the past. As disturbing events begin to transpire, the house begins to influence (and overtake) the visitors’ psyches. To stay sane, they must be stronger than the traumas the house has brought upon them.
The Omni Grove Park Inn, an award-winning, 513-room resort set in the idyllic Blue Ridge Mountains just minutes from downtown Asheville, N.C., is celebrating The 30th National Gingerbread House Competition™, which is the nation’s largest, hosted at the resort annually. Beginning July 6, 2022 the competition registration is officially now open here through November 14, 2022. The competition will be held and winners will be announced on November 21, 2022.
New elements for The 30th National Gingerbread House Competition™ include:
- Introduction of 10th Judge, Ashleigh Shanti, chef/owner of Good Hot Fish & 2020 James Beard finalist.
- Addition of six brand-new specialty awards and increased prizes (60% increase to years past) across the four age categories, which include Best Use of Sprinkles, Most Unique Ingredient, Longest Standing Competitor, Best Use of Color, Pop Culture Star, Most Innovative Structure, and Best Use of Spice.
- All registered competitors will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite piece of the entire competition to determine the winner of the new People’s Choice: Best in Show award.

MSC is an empirically-supported 9-session program that helps participants develop and deepen the skills of self-compassion. Activities include meditation, talks, discussion, and experiential exercises. This class will be held rain or shine outdoors in a beautiful setting over nine Saturdays, 9/17-11/19, skipping 10/15.
We will meet from 10:30AM-2PM with a 30-minute break for lunch midway through each session. Each class participant will receive a copy of The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook.

When it comes to Breast Cancer, we know that early detection saves lives! The Buncombe County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) offers free lifesaving mammograms to qualifying Buncombe women and transgender individuals who don’t have health insurance. “Last program year, over 1,000 qualifying residents got free mammograms,” reports BCCCP coordinator, Melanie Evans. Melanie continues, “Thanks to our services, eight of those women were diagnosed with breast cancer and were able to seek treatment.”
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is life-changing news. “At Buncombe County BCCCP, we do our best to show up for all of our clients in this emotional time,” says Melanie. “We are here to hold your hand through testing, potential diagnosis, and subsequent treatment to make sure you have all the support and information you need.”
We also offer resources to cover the cost of cancer treatment! NC Breast and Cervical Cancer Medicaid is available to help all individuals who receive a cancer diagnosis through the BCCCP program, pay for cancer treatment. This added layer of service allows those who receive a cancer diagnosis to focus of self-care and healing instead of expensive medical bills.

Orange you glad autumn is in the air? That means it’s time to turn over a new leaf at Buncombe County’s Falloween. The popular Lake Julian Park event is free and features a variety of classic fall activities for the whole family. From recreation to entertainment to the scarecrow contest, there’s bound to be something you’ll like a latte (pumpkin spice optional).
Hosted by Buncombe County’s award-winning Recreation Services, this event will feature arts and crafts, food, music, games, and Autumnal themes. Vendors will be selling locally made arts and crafts, there will be food and beverage trucks, and folk band 81 drifters will keep you tapping your toes. Activities will include a pumpkin patch with a painting station, light displays, photo ops, outdoor arcade games, and more. And of course, scarecrow contest entries will be on display, and visitors may vote on which is their favorite with the winner being announced during the festival.
Falloween is free to enter, but some activities have nominal fees. The pumpkin patch is $5 per pumpkin and includes the option to paint your pumpkin. Various arts and crafts vendors and food trucks will also have items available for purchase, and we recommend you bring cash.

The Adventure Center of Asheville is excited to host the 10th annual Haunted Trail, Asheville’s only family friendly haunt! This event is ideal for Halloween lovers of all ages, 3-12 being the suggested age range. This is the third year in a row the Adventure Center has hosted this one of a kind live outdoor theatrical experience where guests are promised an entirely immersive and interactive spooky night out while also ensuring no contact. Every year the show is loved by boils and ghouls from all over WNC and we hope to see you there! For younger guests who still aren’t sure about being scared, even for fun, a “Sweet Peek Tour’ is offered nightly at 6:45 pm. The trail is actor free at this time and they can decide if they would like to re enter the line and receive the full show. The Treetop Adventure Park Aerial Glow Trail is also available for guests 4 years or older to enjoy at this event! Climb on two of our aerial trails while they are illuminated with thousands of colorful twinkle and laser lights. If you want to enjoy both of these amazing activities, combo passes are available and WILL sell out, so make sure you reserve your tickets early! *The Haunted Trail does not sell out, however the entrance closes at 9 pm. Don’t miss PIRATES COVE! Join the Asheville Storytelling Circle for a Wickedly Spooky afternoon of storytelling for families. Tellers Zane Chait, Kyra Freeman, and Kirsten Mitchell will entertain audience members of all ages with these scary tales. Kathy Gordon is joining as Emcee.

We will begin with a 1-hour small engine diagnostic, repair, and maintenance demonstration led by Community Farm Manager Chris Link. The workshop will be followed at 6 pm by a “Repair Cafe“, which helps folks repair household goods. This Repair Cafe session will be especially well-equipped for small engines and other farm/garden related jobs like blade sharpening, handle replacements, and power tool repair. This 10-week course will introduce basic principles that are foundational to all Tai Chi movements. Tai Chi is proven to be effective in decreasing pain, stiffness, and risk for falls while improving balance, postural stability, strength, cognitive focus, immune system function, and more. Wednesdays noon -1 pm; August 24th-October 26th. This course has a general public cost of $60. There is no additional cost for members, the course is included.
