The Philosophy Department at the University of North Carolina, Asheville hosts a biennial professional philosophy conference on the Philosophy of Disability. On March 6-7, 2020, we will be hosting our 3rd such conference. Papers presented engage with Disability Studies from a philosophical point of view. Past speakers include Eva Feder Kittay, Kim Q. Hall, Adam Cureton, and Kevin Timpe. This year’s keynote speaker is Professor ElizabethBarnes (University of Virginia), who is the author of The Minority Body: A Theory of Disability (Oxford University Press, 2016). Professor Barnes’s keynote lecture will be “Gender without Gender Identity: Cognitive Disability and the Need for Gender Inclusion” in which she argues that the growing popularity of views that equate gender with gender identity marginalize some cognitively disabled people.

It’s been a long time…an art exhibit of watercolor paintings and mixed-media boxes by student/artist Nick Humphreys and his teacher Richmond Smith.
Nick Humphreys mostly paints what he loves best: flowers. But he also collaborates on different watercolor paintings, of Richmond and Nick’s special relationship, and the artwork that they have produced over these past two years. Nick says that “If art is detailed and organized, it makes your heart connect with your brain and what you’re thinking.” Richmond Smith creates mixed-media boxes inspired from poems that he has written and from personal experiences that reflect acute observations about the world that we live in. Richmond explores how an artist’s practice might incorporate as many materials and techniques as possible to express the idea & his vision in the best way.

The Freeflow Band is known to throw an “irresistible dance party” with a set-list full of Motown, R&B, Soul and of course, Funk. The dynamic foursome is made up of lead singer and percussionist Lil’ Rog Ware, lead singer Kazual Collins on keyboards, vocalist and bassist Darrell ‘The Black Note’ Griffin and LT on lead guitar. Draft your co-workers, BFFs, and neighborhood pals in your quest for kickball stardom! Registration for Buncombe County Recreation Services’ (BCRS) popular Adult Kickball League has opened. All games will be played on Wednesday evenings from April 8-May 20 at Charles D. Owen Park (875 Warren Wilson Road in Swannanoa). Staggered matches will start at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m.
“We host low-cost adult sport and recreation leagues throughout the year including dodgeball and volleyball, but kickball is our most popular. It always sells out since it’s easy to learn for any skill level,” said Mac Stanley, BCRS Program Coordinator. “The league offers a low-stress, fun atmosphere in which to stay active and connect with others. The move to Charles D. Owen Park allows us to play multiple games at the same time which means we can start later in the evening for those folks busy with work, school, or parenting. Plus the mountain views can’t be beat!”
Registration is open through March 20 and cost $35 per player. Players can sign up as an individual, small group, or full team. Individuals and small groups will be placed together to form full teams.
Teams are co-ed and consist of 9-16 players, with at least three players of the opposite sex. (If a team is majority female, there must be at least three male players. If a team is majority male, there must be at least three female players.) Registration fees include a team shirt and help offset the cost of referees and field maintenance.
The Bob Moog Foundation is thrilled to announce its 2020 Minimoog Raffle, featuring a vintage, iconic Minimoog Model D synthesizer, signed by legendary keyboardist Herbie Hancock. The synthesizer is valued at $5,000. Hancock signed the back of the Minimoog, serial number 1549, and drew a musical staff and added the inscription “(Hey Bob!)” on either side. The raffle begins on Monday, February 10, 2020, and ends on Tuesday March 10, 2020 or when all tickets have sold. Tickets are $25 each, five for $100, 12 for $200, or 35 for $500. Only 4,500 tickets will be available. All proceeds from the raffle support the Foundation’s educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, and its newly opened Moogseum, located in Asheville, NC. Herbie Hancock joins a long list of renowned musicians supporting the Foundation’s efforts. Recent raffles have featured vintage synthesizers signed by Stevie Wonder, Dr. Fink of Prince and the Revolution, Jan Hammer, and Rick Wakeman. Hancock, whose illustrious career spans five decades and 14 Grammy awards, helped pioneer the use of synthesizers in jazz, and has been at the forefront of using technology to make music. He is known for his ever-probing jazz sensibilities, his willingness to explore music across all genres, and is considered to be among the most elite and influential players of his time.

This year’s program will be held at locations throughout Buncombe County from Tuesday, April 14-Friday, May 15. Registration is $5 before March 9 or $10 after that date. The 27th Annual Spring Conference—for farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, and sustainability seekers—is hosted by Organic Growers School (OGS), an Asheville-based non-profit organization. The conference takes place Friday–Sunday, March 6–8, 2020. The weekend event takes place at Mars Hill University in Mars Hill and the pre-conference events are in Buncombe and Henderson Counties.
Cost for the pre-conference workshops are $60 with conference registration (Saturday, Sunday, or both) and $75 without. Cost for the weekend conference if registered by January 31, 2020 is $65 for Saturday and $80 for Sunday with the full weekend for $110. For registration after January 31, the cost of Saturday is $80, Sunday is $70 and the full weekend is $140.

The 2020 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Tournament

Tickets for the 2019 Ingles Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships presented by General Shale are now on sale through Ticketmaster and the U.S. Cellular Center Box Office. The tournaments return to Asheville, North Carolina, and the U.S. Cellular Center for the seventh consecutive year.
All 10 SoCon men’s teams and all eight women’s teams will converge on Asheville for the tournaments, which begin with the women’s quarterfinals on Thursday, March 7. The women’s final will be Sunday, March 10, at noon Eastern, while the men’s final will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 11. Mercer is the defending women’s champion and UNC Greensboro is the defending men’s champion.
The tournament week will feature the return of the Downtown Dribble on the morning of Saturday, March 9, and the third annual Ingles Jamfest, a free concert and tailgate on March 10.

Growing Wild Forest School is excited to provide a dynamic, nature-based Kids Program at this year’s OGS Spring Conference. Our talented staff educators believe in nurturing kids outdoors to help them grow and reach their full potential. We believe in supporting and engaging the whole child, inside and out. We will offer crafts, science experiments, outdoor activities, and indoor and outdoor play opportunities on the Mars Hill University campus during the conference hours. Children should be dressed to go outside and be comfortable for outdoor play activities. Snacks and water bottles should be brought each day. We will break for lunch from 12:45-1:45 for children to eat with their parents or caregivers.

Works will inspire visitors to think about the beauty and fragility of plants and the natural world through various perspectives and printmaking techniques. All pieces are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will benefit The North Carolina Arboretum Society.
Founded in 2013, the Asheville Printmakers is an energetic group of artists dedicated to expressing ideas and imagery through the medium of print. The group encompasses a wide range of processes and content, including traditional methods, such as lithography, woodcut and screen printing, and contemporary photographic printing processes, such as carbon printing, platinum-palladium and photopolymer etching.
There are no other admission charges required for visitors to access the Arboretum’s grounds and facilities during the day beyond the standard parking fees listed above.

Spend your evening learning about the Red and Grey Wolves of North America with your family! We’ll start with an indoor presentation on these elusive creatures, followed by a trek to our wolf habitats located onsite at the Nature Center for a howling session. Discover the legends and lore of these top predators and find out the truth about wolves. This kid-friendly version of our Wolf Howl event is geared toward families. $10 for children, $18 for adults.
