Desire Paths Art Exhibition
Feb 5 @ 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
Center for Crafts

digital collage with face pieces

Desire Paths looks at makers within the discourse of craft and those existing on the periphery of the craftscape who focus on the movement of the body towards something desirable. These desires of the body are in relationship to nature, technology, self, and society. Using architectural theory and queer curatorial strategies, Desire Paths examines the possibilities and futures of bodies, revealing connections between the corporeal and craft.

“Desire paths,” a term taken from urban planning, are lines trodden in the landscape when constructed walkways do not provide a direct or desired route. Through action, repetition, and intentionality, desire paths are crafted modifications to the landscape that allow for a body to move towards a horizon. The format of the works include traditional craft media, performance, video, and interactive web-based work. Through this variety of media and performative tactics the makers in Desire Paths consider how we view, value, and ascribe meaning to a body/the body/the others body. They show us the power and agency held in body and present us with crafted visions of the body that confront and expand expectations

The works in this exhibition reclaim the concept of craft from its historical associations with the decorative, frivolous, feminine, indigenous, and the other. The makers use the medium of craft, and the action of crafting, to produce powerful representations and counter narratives to dominant culture.

Slow Art Friday Threads of History: Cut, Sewn, and Pressed
Feb 5 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Online w/ Asheville Art Museum

SLOW ART FRIDAYS

Each Friday at 12pm, docents lead virtual, in-depth conversations about a few artworks in our Collection or special exhibitions. The goal is simple: slow down, discover the joy of looking at art, and talk about the experience with others. Topics, artworks, and self-guided questions are posted on the Museum’s website in advance for participants, or for those wishing to have a self-guided experience on their own.

This virtual program takes place via Zoom. Space is limited; registration is required. To register, click here.

Join Kathy Seguin, touring docent, for an interactive conversation about three artworks in our Collection and special exhibition Across the Atlantic. Before the discussion, find a quiet space. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let it out slowly. Now open your eyes, and engage with the artworks in the image gallery; click on the thumbnail for a larger image, and spend about 15 minutes looking slowly at each.

  • What’s going on in this artwork? What do you see that makes you say that?
  • What are some common threads weaving these artworks together?
  • Where do you see cut, sewn, and pressed elements in these artworks? What might they symbolize?

The Travelling Pilsburys’ Benefit for Asheville Guitar Bar
Feb 5 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Isis Music Hall

Come out for a night of fun music with a local band that has been performing for many months outside at the Asheville Guitar Bar in the River Arts District. As the winter weather prevents outside shows and the Guitar Bar is not able to hold any indoor concerts IMH has offered the space in our larger room to host the show.
Mark Goldthwaite, Brad Hodge, Greg Hodge, Dave Wendelin, and Joe Daugherty, 5 of the Asheville Guitar Bar’s locally infamous singer/songwriters, are “The Travelling Pilsburys”. Their easy listening style showcases brilliant vocal harmonies and beautiful, original songwriting. Brotherly ribbing and storytelling keep the evenings’ entertainment light and fun. They seriously can’t help but think themselves funny! It’s not true that they’re only in it for the dough!! This is an incredibly entertaining variety show of easy listening and comic relief.
Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at the Isis Music Hall. Reservations are highly recommended.
Here’s the scoop on our Fall and Winter Concerts!!
Things are going to be a little different due to the “new norm” / COVID19 regulations. So we ask that y’all just bear with us!!
Unlike our previous concerts, these will be a dinner and a concert format – We have to follow strict distancing rules right now until things return to normal.
There will be tables throughout the music hall and on the balcony – these tables will be specifically spaced to meet distancing regulations.
These tables will be the ONLY seating.
The tables are available for DINING only – unfortunately with the limited seating we can not offer tables to those that are only enjoying a beverage. Seating is limited so we recommend calling and making dinner
Our same delicious food will be back on the menu in a more limited selection until we can get things up and running steadily again.
We hope that you understand and support these changes as we all are working through how to navigate these times!! We’re so excited to back open for live music and to see some familiar faces!!
Please give a call with any other questions or to reserve a table!! 828-575-2737

Continuing the Challenge – Shecession
Feb 6 all-day
Online w/ YWCA

INTRODUCTION: Congratulations, you’ve finished the 21 Day Challenge! Thank you for participating and making this experience so enriching. We hope you learned something new and deepened your commitment to dismantling racism wherever it shows up in your daily life. Although this session of the Challenge has come to an end, the conversation continues and the work is not over! As we see markers like current unemployment numbers and COVID-19 illness and fatalities on the rise, especially among women in Black and brown communities, we ask you to continue this habit-building series with an additional set of resources to close this session of the challenge. It’s widely known that we are in a recession but why is this one different?

WE CHALLENGE YOU TO…

15 mins
Read our op-ed published recently in the Asheville Citizen-Times. Our nation is experiencing the onset of our first female-led recession– more appropriately, a “Shecession”– which was fueled by disappearing service-sector jobs and a lack of child care options.

10 mins
The U.S. lost 140,000 jobs in December, but according to this CNN article, women accounted for all the job losses.

30 mins
The LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin and YWCA USA partnered on a research paper entitled “America’s Recovery from the 2020 “Shecession”: Building a Female Future of Childcare and Work,” which details how challenges and systemic inequities are contributing to this economic crisis’ and the disproportionate impact on women. The white paper outlines how national and local policymakers have failed to identify women’s economic security concerns, despite overwhelming support among women, around key areas like childcare, equal pay, and fair workplaces. The authors of the report demonstrate the ways the country’s childcare system is failing parents, children, childcare workers, and the American economy, and raise serious concerns about a future of work that will automate women out of the workforce.

What is the 21 Day Racial Equity & Social Justice Challenge?

Many people are becoming newly aware of how systemic racism and violence are impacting people of color. Even if you are new to the conversation, that is OK. Our 21 Day Challenge is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of race, power, privilege, and leadership. Participants who sign up for the Challenge will receive daily tasks via email to help foster their understanding and awareness, with activities such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, or reflecting on personal experience. If you’ve already completed this challenge with us in the past please know that our challenge is designed to be taken multiple times by selecting different daily challenges in order to expand what you have previously learned. Follow this link for the resources.

COVID-19 Testing General Information

Think you have been exposed to COVID?

Testing is widely available at urgent cares, federally qualified health centers, and through some primary care providers for those who need it however, it remains important to focus on the prevention of COVID first and foremost to keep the virus from spreading further into the community and to loved ones.

Find testing near you:

  • If you DO NOT HAVE a healthcare provider who offers testing for COVID-19 and you need to get tested, there are several ways to find testing near you.
  • Visit the Find My Testing Place website to find a clinic or pop up testing site near you.
  • People in Buncombe County can access testing by completing the Buncombe County Self-Checker online. If you need testing, you can set up an appointment at one of the county’s open-air, drive-through sites. COVID-19 Vaccination Waitlist + Standby List FAQ
Feb 6 all-day
online w/ Buncombe County Government

Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BCHHS) has launched a COVID-19 vaccination waitlist for individuals in the first two phases of the state’s vaccination priority list: adults 65 and older and all health care workers. Individuals can sign up for the waitlist by calling (828) 250-5000 or by going to www.buncombeready.org. As vaccines are received from the state, representatives from the Ready Team will contact individuals on the waitlist via phone to schedule their appointments. We have compiled some frequently asked questions below.

Who can sign up for the waitlist?

Vaccine supplies remain much lower than demand, so waitlist opportunities are only available at this time to those active groups identified by the NCDHHS. If you are over the age of 65 or a health care worker in Buncombe County, you can sign up for the waitlist to receive a COVID vaccine so that you don’t have to keep calling or emailing the department to get an appointment.

The only required information to be added to the waitlist is your name, a reliable way to contact you and that you fall into one of the phases eligible for a vaccine at this time. There is no citizenship status requirements, cost, or insurance information required at any time during the vaccination process.

What happens after I sign up?

Once you are signed up for the waitlist, you will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours. The confirmation email should have your waitlist ID number, your name, telephone number and email address. The waitlist ID number is where you fall on the waitlist based on when you signed up for the waitlist.

As we receive vaccine from the state, we open up appointments. We use the waitlist to schedule our appointments. You can call the Ready Team at (828)250-5000 if you have a question about your waitlist confirmation.
