Asheville Catholic School presents the 14th Annual Shamrock Run on Saturday, March 14. There are two races: a 5K and a 10K, both of which start and finish at ACS and run through the beautiful neighborhoods of North Asheville. A fun run will precede the start of the 5K and 10K.  The 10K will start at 9:00 AM and the 5K at 9:15 AM. The Fun Run will begin at 8:30 AM. All events benefit the O’Brien and William Edward Gibbs Memorial Scholarship Fund.  The event will be three days before St. Patrick’s Day this year giving everyone a perfect way to celebrate this fun holiday. There will be great food, beer, and a DJ before and after the races.

On display daily January 18 – April 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the upstairs gallery of the Education Center, the Asheville Printmakers’ newest exhibit, Natural Impressions, will feature a variety of two- and three-dimensional print pieces utilizing numerous printmaking processes. Works will inspire visitors to think about the beauty and fragility of plants and the natural world through various perspectives and printmaking techniques. All pieces are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will benefit The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

Founded in 2013, the Asheville Printmakers is an energetic group of artists dedicated to expressing ideas and imagery through the medium of print. The group encompasses a wide range of processes and content, including traditional methods, such as lithography, woodcut and screen printing, and contemporary photographic printing processes, such as carbon printing, platinum-palladium and photopolymer etching.

Mountain Gateway Museum & Heritage Center celebrated the opening of its newest traveling exhibit, “Steeped in Time: Tea and Traditions” on Saturday, January 18, 2020. The exhibit will run through the July 4th weekend at MGM, located at 24 Water Street in Old Fort. Admission is free.

The exhibit is on loan from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and has been supplemented with artifacts from the Smith-McDowell House collection. Entrance to the exhibit is included with Smith-McDowell House admission – and is always free for members – and runs through May 16, 2020.

The exhibit seeks to put the local men and women who served in context with the larger events happening in North Carolina, the United States, and the world. In the exhibit, visitors will find displays and interactive elements telling the stories of just a few of our hometown heroes.

The Paladins host perennial Southern Conference rival Wofford College on Saturday, February 22, at 12:00 p.m. at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

All homes are located in National Register listed Norwood Park which offers an eclectic mix of houses mostly built between 1912 and the 1930s. Docents will be available in each home to answer questions. Participants should be able to walk several city blocks and negotiate stairs & public walkways. Tour will happen rain or shine, please bring a raincoat or umbrella as needed.  There are no paper tickets for this event.

The event is open to the public with an early-bird rate of $15 before Feb. 15. Runners who sign up before March 1 will receive a t-shirt and swag bag, and registration continues through March 14 at a cost of $20, with on-site registration and check-in starting at 2 p.m. the day of the race. Joe Zimmerman grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia, and started his comedy career in North Carolina. While living in the South, his stand-up group the Beards of Comedy landed a record deal with Comedy Central Records. He moved to New York City in 2012, quickly appearing on The Late Late Show and John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, as well as performing at Montreal’s prestigious Just for Laughs festival. His resume has since grown to include The Tonight Show, Conan, Nickelodeon, Last Comic Standing, and his own Comedy Central Half Hour. UNC Asheville Department of Music Joint Concert with Reuter Center Singers

The UNC Asheville Department of Music in collaboration with the Reuter Center Singers presents Music Leads The Way, a concert honoring the enduring spirit of those who stood up and demanded the right to vote for women.  Music has always been an integral part of how we communicate with one another.  Whether marching, protesting, gathering in homes or reminiscing, songs like Walk Together Children, How Can I Keep from Singing, and March for the Women have knit the community together around a common cause.  Not only is the cause of Women’s Suffrage highlighted, but the role music plays in shaping our common experience.

The concert features the UNC Asheville Wind Ensemble, University Chorale, and Reuter Center Singers.

We will be holding our next gathering at the Center for Art and Spirit at the St. George Episcopal Church in West Asheville from 4-5:20 p.m. on Sunday, February 23. St. George Episcopal is at 1 School Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

This gathering will be open to 50 participants and will feature a Sonic Moving Meditation. Nancy Jurek will take people on a journey that will include meditation, movement, and relaxation. River Guerguerian will be providing a live soundtrack using an array of global percussion instruments.

The meditation will be preceded by a brief presentation about the
LivingPulse, and the gathering will conclude with a group discussion about the experience. After you register and before this free event occurs, we will email you a short paper describing a few of the ideas behind the LivingPulse organization, which may help prepare your mindset for the activity and succeeding discussion.

WNC Repair Cafe is a place where you’ll find volunteers with tools and supplies, available to fix broken objects while offering instruction in the form of hands on help. This is a free program where you are encouraged to bring in your broken appliance, stuck zipper, rusty tools, old bicycle, dull pruning shears – whatever you can imagine – and work with our volunteers to make the necessary repairs to keep it running.

Repair Cafes across the world have helped build resilient communities by offering access to hands on experience in the art of repair. At WNC Repair Cafe we’ll gather volunteers from the area for an evening of helping a neighbor, learning by doing, sharing ideas and reducing waste.
