NIKKI GLASER: Alive and Unwell Tour
Nov 16 @ 7:00 pm
Peace Concert Hall

For nearly two decades at clubs across the country, and as the host of three hit podcasts, Nikki Glaser has honed her shockingly honest, no-holds barred style of comedy, solidifying herself as one of the funniest voices in comedy today.

Glaser is currently on the road with her global THE GOOD GIRL stand-up tour, which kicked off in January 2023 and will continue through September 2024. Upcoming, Glaser returns to screens on May 11 with her highly anticipated second HBO comedy special, SOMEDAY YOU’LL DIE and the new CW series LOVERS AND LIARS, which she hosts and executive produces. Her first HBO comedy special, GOOD CLEAN FILTH, which was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Special.

Nikki took her love of reality TV to the next level by starring in, and executive producing, the E! half-hour reality sitcom WELCOME HOME NIKKI GLASER? Uprooted from her fast-paced Hollywood lifestyle, Nikki returns to her hometown of St. Louis where she embarks on a hilarious and often uncomfortable journey of self-discovery. Unfiltered, relatable, and unapologetically herself, Nikki navigates friends, family, and romance as a homegrown local celebrity.
Nikki was a standout at the Comedy Central Roasts of Alec Baldwin, Bruce Willis, and Rob Lowe, which led to her guest-hosting JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! and hosting the inaugural edition of the 2021 MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS: UNSCRIPTED, which earned her stellar reviews.  She also had memorable film and television roles in Judd Apatow’s TRAINWRECK, NBC’s AP BIO and INSIDE AMY SCHUMER, amongst others. In November 2022 Nikki was a triumph coming in third place on the ninth season of the hit FOX series THE MASKED SINGER.

Nikki has multiple stand-up specials and late-night tv appearances in which she jokes about her most humiliating moments as a woman in the modern world. Nikki’s past and current struggles with anorexia, depression, and anxiety are fair game in both her stand-up, and in-depth interviews with THE HOWARD STERN SHOW, WTF with MARC MARON, CONAN O ́BRIEN NEEDS A FRIEND and THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE. She has become a complete open book on mic for the laughs and as the empowering voice for women that she yearned for as a confused adolescent.

BonaFide featuring Paula Harris
Nov 16 @ 7:30 pm
Hendersonville Theatre

To close out our 2024 Hometown Sound Music Series, Hendersonville Theatre presents a special concert, BonaFide, featuring Paula Harris. BonaFide lives up to its name, delivering an authentic and soulful blend of Funk, Blues, and Soul that’s as genuine as it gets. As Rootstime Magazine in Belgium puts it, BonaFide “combines the passion and conviction of blues with the sophistication and complexity of jazz.” Their music is a groove-driven, funky, and delicious mix of original material and creatively reimagined classic soul and funk covers.

The powerhouse group is led by award-winning vocalist Paula Harris and acclaimed bassist Mike Frost, both of whom bring their diverse musical backgrounds to the forefront. What makes BonaFide truly special is that every member is a band leader in their own right: Paula Harris (Vocals) from Northern California, Mike Frost (Bass) from New York, Iliana Rose (Keys & Vocals) from Los Angeles, and Mike Gibilisco (Sax & Vocals) from Tampa. Together, they create a world-class sound that’s fresh, vibrant, and undeniably original.

BonFide featuring Paula Harris
Nov 16 @ 7:30 pm
Hendersonville Theatre

To close out our 2024 Hometown Sound Music Series, Hendersonville Theatre presents a special concert, BonFide featuring Paula Harris. Just like the definition of the band’s name, BonaFide is “authentic, sincere or without artifice.” The band dishes out music that is “genuine & real” from organic instruments and no special effects. It is the result of a collaboration by vocalist Paula Harris and bassist Mike Frost, both musicians with jazz backgrounds and a love and appreciation of soul, funk, and blues. These two powerhouses have come together to create world-class original music and imaginative covers.

The six-member group sprang from the first time Harris and Frost worked together. The chemistry was so blatant, that they immediately began working on arrangements. Featuring technical precision, BonaFide offers a blend of multiple genres. Approachable with broad appeal, the group is influenced by many American music genres including groups like Stuff, Anita Baker, and Post Modern Jukebox. BonaFide is, simply put, great music from musicians at the top of their game, sophisticated, fresh, and fun!

American Made: Paintings and Sculpture from the DeMell Jacobsen Collection
Nov 17 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

American Made: Paintings and Sculpture from the DeMell Jacobsen Collection features more than 100 works of art by renowned American artists. The exhibition beautifully illustrates distinctive styles and thought-provoking art explored by American artists over the past two centuries. Though many objects from the DeMell Jacobsen Collection have been on view at other museums, ranging from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and Saint Louis Art Museum, this exhibition features the best of the collection brought together in one location. The exhibition begins with Colonial-era portraits by masters, such as Benjamin West, Thomas Sully, and Sarah Miriam Peale, and then moves on to highlight the development of mid-19th-century landscape painting. Viewers will discover works depicting the United States from coast to coast by artists, including Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Jasper Francis Copsey, and even a monumental arctic scene by William Bradford.

Bill Viola’s Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier
Nov 17 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

Bill Viola’s Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier, 1979 on loan from Art Bridges is an immersive experience that explores the ideas of death and regeneration in nature. In a darkened room, sounds from nature envelop the viewer, as a placid pool of water reflects a projected image of Mount Rainier onto a screen. The water is periodically disturbed, causing the image to dissolve and slowly recompose as the pool settles. As an active volcano at rest, Mount Rainier embodies both quiet beauty and dramatic violence. Using time as both a tool and a theme in his work, Viola visualizes the dualities of nature’s rhythms of renewal, which include moments of both fragility and strength.

Forces of Nature
Nov 17 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work, drying it in air, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical, stylistic, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination
Nov 17 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Art Museum

The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life. When the tree rings of a stump are viewed through a device’s camera lens, a hologram of a fictional plant appears to sprout from the sculpture. These imagined fruits and flowers have evolved from existing flora, developing dramatic appendages and skills necessary to flourish in this radically different environment. In Ruffner’s fantastical reality, tulips develop stem flexibility, pears contain windows to the outside world, and flowers take on the form of birds. The installation includes Ruffner’s tongue-in-cheek descriptions of her surreal flora and their remarkable, sometimes humorous adaptations. Used as inspiration for the AR images, 19 original drawings by the artist will also be on view.
