A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings, as well as wine service and etiquette.

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a suggested prerequisite for the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course. The WSET L1 Award is a 6-hour, one day course and includes an exam with 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes, printed study guide, tasting of over 10 wines, food pairing exercises, and exam fee. Successful candidates receive a certificate and lapel pin for the internationally-recognized WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

Three day class with exam

For individuals seeking a core understanding of a wide range of wines, this qualification explores the major grape varieties of the world and the regions in which they are grown. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence. The course includes tastings of over 30 wines.

It is intended as vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry. The qualification is suitable wherever a good level of product knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies. The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course is also appropriate for those not employed in the drinks industry but who want a serious education in wine and wish to broaden their knowledge in a structured way. Successful candidates receive a certificate and lapel pin for the internationally-recognized WSET Level 2 Award in Wines. L2 is a pre-requisite for WSET Level 3 Award in Wines. Here in Asheville, Indivisible Asheville/WNC and the NC Poor People’s Campaign will host “NO KINGS: Rise Together”-a celebration of collective power, community care, and purposeful action-in collaboration with many other community organizations, including Third Act WNC, Sunrise WNC, the WNC Workers Assembly, Asheville Alliance for Palestine Solidarity, Asheville Food and Beverage United (AFBU), The People’s Place, Center for Participatory Change, and others.

The day’s participatory activities offer many opportunities to connect and get involved:
* TAKE ACTION. Explore action-oriented tables hosted by community groups where you can do more than just collect flyers-you’ll have the chance to sign up for volunteer opportunities, take part in trainings, and contribute to real-time causes like food justice and immigrant rights

We’ll begin with a short introduction to tall tales—a playful style of story where characters are bigger than life, the details are wildly exaggerated, and nothing is too impossible to imagine. Think tornado-taming, moon-jumping, pancake-stacking kind of adventures.
Then, kids will explore the gallery to find a piece of art that sparks their own tall tale. With notebooks in hand, they’ll write their stories and return for a joyful story-sharing circle to close the night.

We will also have info on current calls to action and upcoming events, plus updates on community service projects. And our program will feature a training in crowd safety and legal rights everyone should know when participating in protests and large public events. So join us! Tryon Arts and Crafts School is pleased to announce that our next exhibition hits very close to home with a lively presentation of painted wooden toys made circa 1915 through the 1930s by the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers. In a special addition, the exhibition will be complemented by a display of handcrafted wooden toys by Younger Brother Woodworking, the studio of local artisan Ray Buckmaster. Together, these two exhibits celebrate both Tryon’s historic and contemporary traditions in toy-making craftsmanship.

This exhibition reflects the enduring spirit of craftsmanship that has long defined Tryon, connecting past and present in a celebration of artistry, history, and community.

Elderflower Community, a local non-profit, is thrilled to announce its grand re-opening on June 26, 2025.
